What is artist David Frankum up to?
My latest comic, Pictures Made Of Light, has been reviewed by Richard Bruton over at the Forbidden Planet Blog.
Richard says:
“Read it first time and you wonder what it means, wonder if it even means anything. Read it a second, third, fourth time and you’ll still be wondering if it has any meaning, but by that stage you’ll be ascribing meaning to it, and then you may start to believe it’s not about the meaning, it’s about the meaning that you bring to it.”
That’s about as good a review as I could have wished for. Two pounds is still quite a bit of money for a 20-page comic, and if I can’t get people to read it at least twice - to get the absolute best value for money they can - then I’m not achieving half of what I set out to.

Thanks also to mentions of Pictures Made of Light from UK creators David Frankum (“…a delightful publication”) and Rol Hirst (“…gorgeous little comic”).
Thanks again to Richard for the review (which you can read in full here). Pictures Made Of Light is available to buy here. The next five orders will receive a fully inked and marker-toned A7 character illustration with their order.
Also in the Caption Art Auction this coming Saturday is the above piece, contributed by Andrew Cheverton on this year’s convention theme of ‘austerity’. It is based on the quote “When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes,” from Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus.
All proceeds from the auction go to the Caption Warchest, ensuring that the not-for-profit convention for creators and readers of the British small press and indy comic scene can continue to provide such a relaxed and beneficial event for the UK scene.
Up for grabs in the Caption Art Auction this Saturday evening (see here for details), is this gorgeous painting by Tim Keable done for the cover of The Girly Comic 5.
All proceeds from the auction go to the Caption Warchest, ensuring that the not-for-profit convention for creators and readers of the British small press and indy comic scene can continue to provide such a relaxed and beneficial event for the UK scene.
Caption is “a comics festival held in Oxford every summer since 1992”, a gathering of comic creators and readers in an incredibly informal setting - with a bar. Check out the Caption website for more details of guests, panels, activities and whatnot. Tim and I will be there on the Sunday most likely, although it’s possible that one or the other of us may make the Saturday also. I shall be premiering my new comic Pictures Made of Light at the event, and we both have contributions in the Art Auction taking place on the Saturday evening.
We’d love to see you there!

So that’s that then. Today saw the last page of Complex put to digital paper, bringing it to a conclusion after six chapters and 190 pages. I hope that you’ve enjoyed it, or read it at least. The story debuted in March of 2009, and ended up in almost exactly the same place that I had planned when I first began it.
Complex is one of Douglas’s very best works, an intelligent, unsettling and rewarding piece of character-based science fiction. You can read all of Complex online here, or purchase print issues here.

The fifth issue of my comic PJANG (People Just Ain’t No Good) is finally available to order by clicking here!
The comic features two all new strips written by me, with art from Peerless Paul Rainey and Crackerjack Kelvin Green.
At this year’s Bristol International Comic and Small Press Expo, West artist Tim Keable sold two pieces of original West art to a couple of avid younger fans - who were kind enough to send us this picture of the two pictures framed and on the wall. On the left, we have an unused cover for the West: Justice hardback, and on the right, the line art for the limited edition of the Texas Drama issue. Click-through for a higher resolution image.
