Panel Borders: The Last Ride of the Western Heroes

Press release from Panel Borders:

“Continuing our month of shows about genre in comics, Alex Fitch talks to creators of small press and mainstream cowboy comics. Alex talks to veteran comics writer John Ostrander about his classic serialised graphic novel The Kents featuring the history of Superman’s great grandparents in 19th century Kansas and their encounters with the Luthers of the time, which is being re-released in three ‘100 page giants’ this winter. Alex and John also talk about Blaze of Glory: The Last Ride of the Western HeroesGrimjack and his unrealized Doctor Who audio western.

“Also in an interview recorded at this year’s Bristol Small Press Expo, Tim Keable and Andrew Cheverton talk about their ongoing comic West, which has recently included horror tropes and guest artists, plus their future plans for the title and its graphic novel collections. (This is the 300th radio show that Alex Fitch has made for Resonance FM!)

“8pm, Sunday 13th November, Resonance 104.4 FM (London) / streamed at www.resonancefm.com  / extended podcast after broadcast at www.panelborders.wordpress.com

365thday:

“We’re a bunch of young offenders and not one of us knows how to steal a car? This is pathetic!”- Nathan

Misfits by Andrew Cheverton

My friend Nick Papaconstantinou (of Elephant Words and the MOMBcast) wanted to make an artbook for his wife on their first anniversary, so he asked a bunch of folk for illustrations based on his wife’s favourite things.
I did MisFits. The idea at the time was to make it look like a lo-fi vinyl single. So, yeah… it’s supposed to look like that.
Tim Keable did a Mulan illustration, and I also contributed one for 30 Days of Night. I’ll post them here as Nick puts them up.

Stray Bullets reviewed at Forbidden Planet

Richard Bruton has reviewed West: Stray Bullets over at the Forbidden Planet blog.

Of the script, Richard says:

“Cheverton’s stories, as usual, are a clever and perplexing mix of interesting clues to the mystery of West, wrapped up in some great storytelling… Every time a new issue comes out, I can’t help but go right back to the beginning and find even more connections, more little elements that go to prove how tightly Cheverton has the entire saga mapped out.”

Richard seemed to (eventually) enjoy the guest artists, too:

“Each artist brings something different to their tales, and they’ve been picked well for the stories they have to tell; whether it’s the beautiful scratchiness of Warwick Johnson Cadwell on a bizarre jail-break for West, the more cartoon style of Rainey giving a comedic touch to the monster in Badwater Lake,  or the simpler, more romantic imagery of Jenika Ioffreda on a very early West tale, of childhood sweethearts Joe and Eloise.

“Of them all though, it was Emma Price’s art that got me going the most – possibly because it was, in a rather simpler and heavier inked sense, the most like Keable’s and suited the story of West very well. “

Stray Bullets: A West Anthology.

“I’ve got a story.”

From the lakes of Montana to the eastern hills of Kansas, the grassy plains of Oregon and ancient mountains of Minnesota to the icy backwoods of Colorado, men gather their stories.

“Heard a lot of tales. Some might even be true.”

Written by Andrew Cheverton and illustrated by Jenika Ioffreda, Emma Price, Warwick Johnson Cadwell, Paul Rainey, Tim Keable, and Andrew Cheverton.
Debuting at the Bristol International Comic & Small Press Expo, 14th-15th of May. Six stories, six artists; 32 pages for £3.50.
