Bristol Comic Expo

This weekend Angry Candy creators Andrew Cheverton and Tim Keable will be at the Bristol Comic Expo, taking place in the recently revamped Brunel’s Old Station at Temple Meads. The event runs from 10-6 on the Saturday and from 10:30-5 on the Sunday.

Debuting at this convention are the latest issue of West - the 32-page special-sized Points West, one of the most pivotal issues so far - and the first issue of a new series The Whale House. We look forward to seeing you there.

You can now buy the first half of my book Video Nasties in a tidier digital format over here.

You should really grab a copy if you’re in the least bit curious, because I’ve made it as cheap as possible - and I just want you to read it. That’s the bottom line.

If you haven’t read Chris’s Video Nasties yet, this is your best opportunity. Video Nasties is hands down the most accessible and compelling indy comic series to come out of the UK since I don’t know when. A lot of indy creators and publishers create wonderful projects - and I love them all - but some are idiosyncratic and self-contained, some are high end art objects and some are stapled photocopies; what Chris has created in Video Nasties is a compelling long-form narrative (mainstream in the best sense of the word) which stands with anything the larger publishers can offer.

One of my concerns in writing The Whale House is to give Chris as much of a story to illustrate as he’s created in Video Nasties. I’m guaranteeing you that this is money (£2.50 for four e-issues!) very well spent.

Points West is the next instalment in volume 2 of West, taking us back to the first ever Jerusalem West story, Believers (which can be read for free online here).

Back when we didn’t know who West was or why two separate gangs of gunmen had come to town to kill him, and addressing how we move beyond the end of Believers, where we left West, his pistol empty, facing down the remaining killers in the main street of a wintry frontier town, Points West answers these questions, and a few others, while posing a handful more.

Points West is a 32-page issue, written by Andrew Cheverton and illustrated by Tim Keable, and will debut at the Bristol Comic Expo on the weekend of May 12/13.

We hear from AccentUK that their Zombies anthology is to get a digital incarnation via the Lush Comics app:

“Zombies collects the talents of a number of independent creators, and some professionals, to provide short stories all with a zombies theme. Tales range from 1 page to 10 pages, from humorous to downright creepy and from clean black and white to murky grey. The original has sold out in its printed format and is now only available digitally through Lush Comics on the iPad and Android tablets.”

Here is a preview of one of my pages for the next issue of Rol Hirst’s Too Much Sex & Violence; I get to draw Vampire DJ Gary Gore and his sister Julia - click on any of the images to expand. These are the various stages I go through to finish a page of comics. It takes me about a year. (No, I jest! It’s a bit less than a year.)

1 - Rough layouts. Depending on who you ask, very rough. Professionals like Dave Gibbons will advise adding black areas here to show your page flow, but I find that only confuses what is already a mass of random squiggles that only mean anything to me, and that less day by day. Draw in your speech balloons, kids - your writer and/or letterer will thank you.

2 - Pencils. I use a blue pencil that won’t show up when I scan it; this saves me a lot of rubbing out, which ruins the inking more often than not. Here I have omitted the seated character you probably couldn’t make out to the right edge of panel one, and adjusted the depth and angle to the penultimate panel.

3 - Inks (or ‘tracing’). I prevaricate here mightily, mostly because I’ve somehow convinced myself that the pencilling doesn’t entirely embarrass me and I’m scared to ruin it with ink, which is so much more permanent. Also, yes, I still draw with pen, paper and ink; none of that Undo safety net here (also, I can’t work computers). For this page, I’ve decided that the ornate bed and the wicker heart were too fiddly, so I’ve completely redrawn them. Where I’m sure I want solid shadows, I ink them in.

4 - Tones. I do this quite primitively (note: your definition of ‘primitive’ may vary - other artists’ reactions to my description of how I tone comics range from quietly impressed to “You’re an idiot.”). As you can see, at this stage I’ve also added some last-minute black shadows to the page.

5 - Texture. This is infinitely simpler than the toning. I just pick through a bunch of paper textures I have collected and lay them over the art. If you’re lucky, one will look good simply by using it as an Overlay (which won’t cover up the white areas like the vampire character’s skin and the panel gutters); if not, then find one you like and crop the white areas back out.

And there you have it. Too Much Sex & Violence 3 will be published soon.

The Whale House is the first in a new series from Angry Candy (and co-published with BitterSweetFatKid), written by Andrew Cheverton and illustrated by Chris Doherty.

What sort of a series can you expect from the creators of West and Video Nasties? We’re not telling. The first issue is scheduled for publication in time for the Bristol Comic Expo in May.

DemonCon 3

Tim Keable and I will be attending the DemonCon 3 convention in Maidstone, Kent, on April the 22nd. Other attendees include Kieron Gillen (Phonogram, Uncanny X-Men) and Andy Lanning (Infinite Crisis, Ultimate Spider-Man), as well as my fellow PJANG and Too Much Sex & Violence artist Robert Wells, and future Month Of Sundays collaborator David Frankum. This convention is an unexpected addition to the schedule, so we won’t have anything new to offer, other than the full range of current Angry Candy comics, signatures, sketches, and the natural bonhomie for which we are justly famed.

The event is being held in the Exchange Studio, part of the Hazlitt Arts centre, where there will be, aside from the usual independent and small press comics exhibitors, live wrestling. This is, as far as can be gauged, a first for comic conventions. More DemonCon details here.

My contribution to AccentUK’s ‘collaborative graphic novel’ Who on Earth was Thaddeus Mist? is to be illustrated (beautifully, if the roughs and designs I’ve seen are any indication) by Jack Tempest. However, originally, my The End collaborator FH Navarro pitched, at my suggestion, for the task. He has recently posted his designs on his own site, and I thought it would be interesting to display them here.
